Mixed Media/Bas Relief Workshop - Lets Create Wild Flowers of Alberta

Bas Relief is a French term meaning low relief. Pronounced: BAUGH relief.

Through tiny differences in the height of your work, you can create a three dimensional surface of art.

Let’s begin your journey by creating Wild Flowers of Alberta.

Supplies for set-up/plaster night

-all boards being used should have a plan for how pieces will be displayed or hung when complete.

Hanging wires or brackets should be attached before boards are in their finished state when the art piece is started. (wires, d-rings, brackets, screws, drills, etc)

Our first class will focus on setting up the surfaces for the next days work. More than one panel set up is definitely ok.

You will need:

-Stiff boards - the surface for plaster relief needs to be very firm/stiff. Birch panel,

Barn wood or plywood all make great surfaces to work on.

-Tub of drywall mud

-drywall scrapper/paddles - various sizes including as wide as boards being used and small palette knives as well.

-spray bottle

-brushes

Second Day Supplies required:

-sketchbook and pencils

-water containers

-rags/papertowel

-drywall mud

-stencils

-individual containers with low walls (not yogurt containers) to hold plaster to be used for bas relief. Large Tupperware containers work great or palette paper can be used.

-Ziploc bags-small or medium. Thick wall bags

- various brushes and palette knives - we will use these for moving plaster as well as painting. Round brushes, chisels, large filler brushes. All sizes and shapes can be used. Bring palette knives you enjoy using. I will demo mark making with various tools.

-dry puck watercolours although any kind of watercolour will work with this medium. No other mediums will be used except at the end of the process.

-BLOWDRYERS do not work great. They dry the outside of the plaster but do not affect the interior and cause the plaster to dry weirdly. I do not recommend using them… for a workshop, they may help a bit but it is a consideration to have a separate image ready to work on so you can set one aside to dry.

-random - found objects, napkins with interesting patterns. Images you find inspiring that you would like to add into this work.

-Gel medium, this is used for attaching found objects and Imagery. It is also used to strengthen the final piece after painting is complete and before varnish.

-varnish - kamar or other spray varnish adds strength to surface and enhances your paint colours.
